FNP Competencies
The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) has established minimum competencies for all nurse practitioner graduates. These include Core Competencies, applicable to all nurse practitioners, as well as Population-Focused Competencies, specific to Family Nurse Practitioners. The population focus of the Family Nurse Practitioner expands the Core Competencies to include all aged patients, from normal newborns through end-of-life.
Scientific Foundation - Use foundation of sciences and humanities, including research to guide practice
Leadership - Assume leadership and foster collaboration to improve health care for patients
Quality - Use best evidence to continually improve care
Practice Inquiry - Use clinical guidelines and new knowledge to improve health outcomes
Technology & Information Literacy - Integrate technology and healthcare for both clinicians and patients
Policy - Advocate for ethical healthcare policy & understand impact of policy on healthcare
Health Delivery System - Promote care through collaboration within health systems to meet needs of diverse groups
Ethics - Integrates ethical principles into clinical decision making
Independent Practice - Provide patient-centered diagnostic and management services for health promotion, prevention, & disease management for patients across the lifespan
